Ways to Fast
One Simple Rule
Whatever you fast from, replace it with listening. If you remove something but don’t create space for God, you’ve only practiced restraint, not fasting.
Fasting is not about proving devotion or earning God’s attention. It is about removing what fills us so God can fill us.
We fast to slow down, to listen, and to remind ourselves that our deepest hunger is for God. “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4)

Partial Fast
Type: Fast one meal per day or specific types of food (e.g., sweets, coffee, or meat).
How: Choose 1 meal during the day to skip and dedicate that time to prayer and reflection. Consider journaling or reading scripture during this time to focus on God.

- Example: If you skip lunch, use the lunch hour to pray for personal repentance and alignment with God’s will.
- Generosity Option: Take the money you would have spent on that meal and donate it to a local ministry, buy food for a neighbor, or contribute to Kelly's Mission.
- Key Verse: "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?" — Isaiah 58:6
Digital Fast
Type: Fast from digital distractions such as social media, TV, or entertainment.
How: Decide which platforms or devices you’ll step away from (e.g., no social media, no TV shows). Use the extra time to prayer walk, spend time in scripture, or meet with your Discovery Bible Study group.

- Example: Replace the time spent scrolling on your phone with reading through a gospel (e.g., Mark) or interceding for your neighborhood.
- Accountability Option: Let someone know you’re doing this fast and share the impact at the end of the week.
- Key Verse: "Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways." — Psalm 119:37

Frequently ASked Questions
What Should I pray for?
- Personal Growth: Ask God to reveal areas of your life that need transformation.
- Community Revival: Pray for your neighbors and church family to experience God’s love and power.
- Global Mission: Intercede for leaders and missionaries being raised to make disciples locally and globally.
- Underground Church Conference: Pray for the October event to spark revival and equip leaders for disciple-making.
What if I’ve never fasted before?
That’s okay! Fasting is a spiritual discipline that takes practice, and starting small is perfectly fine. Begin with one meal or one distraction, such as social media, and dedicate that time to prayer or scripture reading. The goal is to create space for God in your life, not to follow a rigid rule.
Can my family participate?
Absolutely! Fasting and prayer can be a powerful experience for families to do together. Encourage your family to join in ways that are age-appropriate. For example, younger children can fast from snacks or screen time, while teens and adults can participate in meal fasts or prayer walks. Families are also welcome at the evening prayer gatherings and Sunday reflection times.
What should I do if I feel weak or unwell during fasting?
Listen to your body. Fasting can be challenging, especially if it’s your first time. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and consider a modified fast (e.g., juice or broth) if needed. If you feel unwell, it’s okay to pause or adjust your fast—God is more concerned with your heart than with the exact method you follow.
Can I still participate if I can’t attend the in-person gatherings?
Yes! Many of the activities, such as daily devotionals, prayer walks, and fasting, can be done from wherever you are. We’ll also offer weekly Zoom meetings for prayer and reflection so you can stay connected with the community even if you can’t attend in person.
How can I get my DBS or small group involved?
Invite your Discovery Bible Study or small group to join the 21 days of prayer and fasting with you. Use the daily devotionals and prompts to guide your discussions, and consider participating in a prayer walk together. This is a great way to strengthen your group and focus on God’s mission.
What if I don’t see immediate results?
Spiritual growth often takes time, and fasting isn’t about achieving instant results. Trust that God is working even when you can’t see it. Focus on seeking Him, listening for His voice, and aligning your heart with His will.
Can I invite friends or family who aren't a part of Salt City?
Yes! This is a great opportunity to introduce others to the power of prayer and fasting. Encourage them to join the journey and participate in the gatherings or prayer walks. We want to see all Christians mobilized in their faith.
How can I pray for the Underground Church Conference in October?
During the 21 days, we’ll provide specific prayer prompts for the conference, such as asking God to raise up leaders, open hearts, and prepare the Salt Lake Valley for revival. Consider dedicating part of your fast to interceding for this event and the people who will attend.
